Sweet and fine where I lay

dig shallow where the kudzu 
chokes and rambles
pick quick the cuckoo banjo 
pick it sweet and fine

i’m in my winding sheet
lay me down
in the lazy dawn
dirty mamma’s and joes
come along
i’m dead and gone

pada taught me 
a good penny
upgran a good bit more
so yes i gazed 
the dirt and water bowls
traced your fire ants and palms
for a sack a rice

just don’t shake my stone
after i’m dead and gone

catfish and sugar whiskey
from paper cups
jack of diamonds
splashed upon my stone

along the canal camps
tower the holly hocks
with my ash
at the cook outs
for the rovers
